The oil and gas industry continues to grow and diversify, as does the demand for a highly educated, well-trained workforce. A barrel of oil, which consists of 42 gallons, will generate 19.4 gallons of gasoline and the remainder will be used to make an array of products ranging from plastics, to fertilizers, detergents, and asphalt used on our roads.. Over 6,000 different things made from petroleum are used daily. Americans also consume, on average, 250 cubic feet of natural gas per day. There will be a continued need to have individuals whom can perform a broad range of highly skilled jobs within the oil and gas sector.

Industry Outlook & Program Overview
Even with the challenges the oil and gas industry encountered in 2020, highly skilled individuals are still in high demand and are a priority for oil and gas companies in the Permian Basin. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the need for highly skilled oil and gas technicians is projected to grow 23 percent by 2030 nationwide and 18 percent in Texas.
The Energy Technology program prepares students for careers as lease operators and general field technicians within the oil and gas industry. Other career paths may require students to perform different functions as members of an oil and/or gas production team. Coursework will range from basic mechanical aptitude to more highly specialized technical classes.
The Petroleum Energy Program is an expansive program which allows students to develop foundational skills that may be used in several areas within the oil and gas industry. Students may begin accumulating dual-credit in the Petroleum Academy/Petroleum Energy Program as early as their Sophomore year.
Entering their Junior and Senior year, students will have the option to continue in the Petroleum Energy Program Pathway /Petroleum Academy or transition into one of the following technical pathways: Diesel Technology, Welding Technology, Automotive Technology, or Collision Repair Technology.
Hands-on lab assignments are an integral part of all technical programs. Regular attendance and participation are essential in order for students to be successful. Students are expected to be fully engaged in class discussions, projects, and lectures.
SOPHOMORE
Students will complete 3 college credits in OSHT 1301-Introduction to Safety and Health Technology which applies towards a certificate in Petroleum Energy Technology, Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, or Collision Repair Technology.
JUNIOR/SENIOR
PETROLEUM ENERGY TECHNOLOGY PATHWAY
Students will complete an additional 12 college credit hours of coursework and receive the Energy Technician Certificate in Petroleum Energy Technology from Midland College.
DIESEL TECHNOLOGY PATHWAY
Students will complete 15 college credit hours of coursework for a total of 18 college credit hours and receive the Entry Level Diesel Technician Certificate from Midland College.
WELDING TECHNOLOGY PATHWAY
Students will complete an additional 11 college credit hours of coursework and receive the Entry Level Certificate in Welding Technology from Midland College.
AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY PATHWAY
Students will complete 15 college credit hours of coursework for a total of 18 college credit hours and receive the Entry Level Automotive Technician Certificate from Midland College.
COLLISION REPAIR TECHNOLOGY
Students will complete 15 college credit hours of coursework for a total of 18 college credit hours and receive the Collision Repair Technician Certificate from Midland College.

Students will complete 3 college credits in OSHT 1301-Introduction to Safety and Health Technology. An introduction to the basic concepts of safety and health.

ELMT 1305 - Basic Fluid Power
Basic fluid power course covering pneumatic and hydraulic systems, fluid power symbols,
operating theory, components, and basic electrical and manual controls. Students will
identify fluid power symbols; demonstrate knowledge of basic fluid power theory; demonstrate
knowledge of component operation; generate basic fluid power circuits; and demonstrate
fluid power circuits using electrical and manual controls.

INMT 1317 - Industrial Automation
Applications of industrial automation systems, including identification of system
requirements, equipment integration, motors, controllers and sensors. Covers set-up,
maintenance and testing of the automated system.

INMT 2303 - Pumps, Compressors and Mechanical Drives
A study of the theory and operations of various types of pumps and compressors. Topics
include mechanical power transmission systems including gears, v-belts, and chain
drives.

DEMR 1329 - Preventive Maintenance
An introductory course designed to provide the student with basic knowledge of proper servicing practices. Content includes record keeping and condition of major systems.
DEMR 1310 - DIESEL ENGINE TESTING AND REPAIR I
Introduction to testing and repairing diesel engines including related systems and specialized tools. Learn to identify, inspect, test and measure, and disassemble engine parts. Prerequisites: DEMR 1329 or instructor approval.
DEMR 1317 - BASIC BRAKE SYSTEMS
Basic principles of brake systems of diesel powered equipment. Emphasis on maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting.
MCHN 1320 - PRECISION TOOLS AND MEASUREMENT
An introduction to the modern science of dimensional metrology. Emphasis on the identification, selection, and application of various types of precision instruments associated with the machining trade. Practice of basic layout and piece part measurements while using standard measuring tools.
DEMR 1330 - STEERING AND SUSPENSION I
A study of design, function, maintenance and repair of steering and suspension systems. Emphasis on troubleshooting and repair of failed components.
WLDG 1421 - INTRODUCTION TO WELDING FUNDAMENTALS
An introduction to the fundamentals of equipment used in oxy-acetylene welding (OFW-A) and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), including welding and cutting safety, basic oxy-acetylene welding and cutting, basic arc welding processes and basic metallurgy. The student will demonstrate safety procedures associated with equipment; and identify ferrous and nonferrous metals.

An introduction to the basic concepts of safety and health.
WLDG 1457 - INTERMEDIATE SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING (SMAW)
A study of the production of various fillets and groove welds. Preparation of specimens for testing in various positions.
WLDG 1430 - INTRODUCTION TO GAS METAL ARC WELDING (GMAW)
Principles of gas metal arc welding, setup and use of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) equipment, and safe use of tools/equipment. Instruction in various joint designs.

An introduction to the automotive industry including automotive history, safety practices, shop equipment and tools, vehicle subsystems, service publications, fasteners, professional responsibilities and basic automotive maintenance. May be taught manufacturer-specific.
AUMT 2317 - AUTOMOTIVE ENGINE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS I
Theory, operation, diagnosis of drivability concerns, and repair of ignition and fuel delivery systems. Use of current engine performance diagnostic equipment.
AUMT 1310 - AUTOMOTIVE BRAKE SYSTEMS
Operation and repair of drum/disc type brake systems. Topics include brake theory, diagnosis, and repair of power, manual, anti-lock brake systems, and parking brakes.

An introduction to the modern science of dimensional metrology. Emphasis on the identification, selection, and application of various types of precision instruments associated with the machining trade. Practice of basic layout and piece part measurements while using standard measuring tools.
AUMT 1316 - AUTOMOTIVE SUSPENSION AND STEERING
Diagnosis and repair of automotive suspension and steering systems including electronically controlled systems. Includes component repair, alignment procedures and tire and wheel service.
AUMT 1305 - INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY
An introduction to the automotive industry including automotive history, safety practices, shop equipment and tools, vehicle subsystems, service publications, fasteners, professional responsibilities and basic automotive maintenance. May be taught manufacturer-specific.
ABDR 1431 - BASIC REFINISHING
An introduction to current refinishing products, shop safety, and equipment used in the automotive refinishing industry. Emphasis on surface preparation, masking techniques, and refinishing of replacement parts.
ABDR 1458 - INTERMEDIATE REFINISHING
Training in mixing and spraying of automotive topcoats. Introduction to partial panel refinishing techniques.
MCHN 1320 - PRECISION TOOLS AND MEASUREMENT
An introduction to the modern science of dimensional metrology. Emphasis on the identification, selection, and application of various types of precision instruments associated with the machining trade. Practice of basic layout and piece part measurements while using standard measuring tools.
ABDR 2449 - ADVANCED REFINISHING
Application of multi-stage refinishing techniques. Advanced skill development solving refinishing problems. Application of multi-stage refinishing techniques with emphasis on formula mixing and special spraying techniques.
