This intensive course has been presented by Andrew H. Pederson to participants in the United States and abroad. Organized for managers, engineers, geologists, landmen, scientists, accountants and others concerned with evaluating investments, this course relates to the economic analysis of income producing and service producing investments using discounted cash flow analysis criteria and procedures.
Participants may enroll in either the Before-Tax or After-Tax course option. The Before-Tax course covers time value of money, discount rates, investment decision criteria, inflation, and risk and sensitivity analysis. The After-Tax course builds on these concepts and focuses on after-tax cash flow development, tax deductions, depreciation, depletion, working capital, breakeven analysis, and other tax-related investment considerations. Through real-world applications and Excel-based exercises, attendees will gain practical skills for evaluating and comparing investment opportunities.
The course utilizes the textbook Economic Evaluation and Investment Decision Methods,
16th Edition (2019) by Franklin J. Stermole, John M. Stermole, and Andrew H. Pederson,
which presents evaluation techniques through a variety of examples suitable for both
technical and non-technical professionals. No prior economic evaluation experience
is required. Participants should bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel.
In addition to a laptop with Excel, all participants should bring paper and pencil.

This two-and-a-half-day course covers all aspects of reserve reporting -from concepts to validation. Specifically designed for those within the Energy Finance community, participants will learn how to understand, use, and validate a reserve report. Using clear and non-technical language, this course uses modules to introduce basic reservoir concepts, reserves definitions, the preparation of a reserve report and the wide variety of metrics and methodologies used to validate a reserve report. Throughout the course, real-world data, field examples, and reserve software are used to emphasize and demonstrate key concepts. Upon conclusion, participants will have gained a better understanding of how to proactively review, analyze and validate a reserve report; and perhaps more importantly, how to identify the underlying risks not readily apparent in a typical reserve report.
