The Writing Center is the Midland College tutoring center where all MC students have access to FREE tutoring by faculty, staff, and trained peer tutors in the convenience of the library where students also have access to resources such as computers, printers, and reference books for student use.

The Writing Center offers tutor assistance in all steps of the writing process, from brainstorming and drafting to final revisions. Tutors help with formatting issues, research, and citations. They also work with students to improve their use of grammar and mechanics, audience awareness, and organization.

If you need help with pesky commas, an essay, research, etc. we are the place to come!

How Does Tutoring in the on-campus Writing Center Work?

  • Make sure to bring your written assignment sheet from your instructor.
  • Tutoring is a collaborative process (it is not a proofreading or editing service). Your tutor will point out areas of strength and help you to improve by discussing thoughts, ideas, and suggestions with you.
  • At the end of your 20-45 minute session, your work will be improved if you implement feedback, but you may require additional sessions to reach your personal writing goals.
  • Feel free to utilize this resource as often as needed.

What are my online options? What is the Online Dropbox? What is Net Tutor?

n Writing Center Online, students will find supplemental instruction (under "modules") to aid with all steps of the writing process, formatting, researching, improving grammar and mechanics, and college success. We will use this Canvas page to make important announcements about our workshops and events.

We also offer tutoring via a dropbox service. Dropbox is checked Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 8am - 7pm, and Wednesday from 8am - 4pm. Please note, if you submit a paper, you will need your submission deleted before you can submit another paper. Please email segan@midland.edu or speterson@midland.edu if you need a submission deleted.

Upcoming Workshops

Revise like a Pro!

Monday, September 23
8:00-9:00AM
LRC 207

Once you write a draft, where do you go from there? In this workshop we'll break down the errors standing between students and the A paper including organizational mishaps, audience awareness blunders, formatting woes, and common grammatical mistakes. Come spend an hour with us and leave prepared to polish that draft!

Research and MLA Workshop

Tuesday, Nov. 5th, 9:30-10:30, MHAB 202

In the age of misinformation, it's more difficult than ever to find credible sources, but have no fear, the writing center is here to help! In this interactive workshop, we'll test out research databases using topics for participant's real assignments, look at sample MLA papers, and discuss all the specifics of MLA formatting and in-text and works cited page source attribution. MLA is the preferred format for many humanities disciplines. In this hands-on workshop, students will also have the opportunity to research and start to create their own works cited pages.

Suggestions?

Instructors or students that would like to make a request for a specific topic may contact Stacy Egan at segan@midland.edu.
