Magic & Ritual in the Pre-Columbian Americans
We will delve into the intricate and mystical realms of those who once inhabited the
pre-Columbian Americas. Why do we need to, or even want to study the religious and
ritualistic behaviors of the past inhabitants of the Americas? Arthur Demarest states
that our fascination with pre-Columbian religion and ritualism stems from our deep
need to understand, “religions, politics, and worldviews of other cultures that are
both different and difficult to analyze either in terms of their nature or their role
concerning other institutions. We seek to understand them even when they move us away
from our common ground of humanity in the areas of biological needs and into the realm
of thought, cultural values, and philosophy.
