The New Employee Experience (NEE) will orient and equip new Midland College employees with the relationships, tools, resources, and knowledge necessary to be successful employees at Midland College. This program is designed to help new employees understand and integrate into the Midland College culture.

New full-time faculty and staff are expected to participate in this program; part-time employees can participate at the discretion of their supervisor.

New employees will be contacted by the TLC to be invited to participate.

The Teaching & Learning Academy (TLA) is a semester-long, cohort-based program designed to empower faculty to enhance student success through exploration and implementation of an active learning framework. Throughout this academy, participants will have the opportunity to practice, observe, reflect, discuss, and redesign for a truly immersive and transformative experience.

The purpose of the Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is to connect faculty at Midland College to explore and discuss a variety of teaching and learning topics.

Faculty from across the college will engage with one another on a variety of cross-disciplinary teaching and learning topics. These FLCs are loosely structured but allow the faculty to explore topics and ideas that are of interest to them, all while sharing ideas and getting feedback from their faculty colleagues.

Professional Learning Communities (PLC) allow employees at Midland College to come together and discuss important topics relevant to their roles as higher education professionals. Each PLC will be centered on a specific topic and participants will engage in meaningful conversations and activities to further explore that topic.

The TLC is has hosted PLCs on a variety of topics, including:

  • Understanding the Language of Behavior: DISC Behavioral Styles
  • The Power of Emotional Intelligence
  • Resiliency and Change: Navigating Transformative Challenges
  • Workplace Communication: Listen, Engage, Influence, Inspire
  • Professional Skills Development

Mini-Courses vary in length and format, but typically last 3-4 weeks and include some sort of deliverable by the participant. Topics can range from using a specific technology tool to improving communication with students.

The TLC has hosted mini-courses on a variety of topics, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence for Faculty
  • Artificial Intelligence for Staff
  • Creating Engaging Instructional Videos
  • Creating Effective Assessments
  • Faculty Research

The MC Reading Collaborative is an educational book club designed to engage employees in critical thinking and discussion around a text that can be applied to their role at the college. Interested participants will read a common text then meet a few times to discuss how the content impacts their professional practices.

If your department or division would like to participate in a custom Reading Collaborative on a different text, contact the TLC.

Training Series, Events & Awards

The Teaching & Learning Center coordinates two in-service week schedules, one at the start of each fall and spring term. Events include Employee Convocation, Concurrent Sessions, Division Meetings, and other great events and activities.

The in-service schedule is posted on the In-Service Page on the MC website and updated each semester.

National Distance Learning Week

National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) was designed to recognize, highlight, and celebrate the efforts of online teachers, students, and administrators. The goal of the week is for institutions, agencies, and other organizations to engage in discussions to further grow and develop their knowledge and experience with a variety of distance learning topics. Here at Midland College, we celebrate the week by offering opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to engage with one another on how we might be able to enhance the learning experiences in distance learning courses.
