Music

Music Scholarships are available to all qualified MC students, regardless of major. Students interested in private instruction (lessons) are automatically considered for scholarship. Students interested in ensemble performance must audition for scholarship consideration. To date, MC has awarded more than a quarter of a million dollars in music scholarships to new and continuing students.

Performing Ensemble Scholarships

These are the most generous scholarships awarded by the Department of Music. Qualified students interested in a Performance Ensemble Scholarship, must complete an audition for the music faculty and enroll in the specified ensemble. 

Audition Guidelines

Students choose their own audition selections but those selections should adhere to the following:

• Prepare two selections that differ in style and tempo
• Selections do not need to be memorized
• Selections should be appropriate to the expected age, maturity and musical ability of an incoming collegiate student

The selections should represent the student’s serious consideration of the audition process.

Music Lesson Scholarships

Qualified students, enrolling in Music Lessons are automatically considered for music scholarship. No audition is necessary.

From Bach to Bebop, Mozart to Motown or Rachmaninoff to Rock and Roll, the performing ensembles of Midland College bring to life both the music you know and the music that’s new to you.

For students wishing to participate in any one of the instrumental ensembles but who are without a personal instrument, we have a complete line of Conn-Selmer instruments available for use.

There are no course prerequisites to enroll in any ensemble. However, previous experience in a high school, church or collegiate program is necessary.

An audition is required for scholarship.

All-Steinway School

In 2010, Midland College became the fourth community college in the nation to be named an All-Steinway School. As an institution with this designation, we provide students, whether in the practice room or on the performance stage, the best equipment possible for the study of music. 

Conn-Selmer School

In 2012, the Music Department reached another milestone and became the first community college in the world to be named a Conn-Selmer School. Once again, providing the very best instruments and equipment for the study of music. 

Center for Music Technology and Creativity (CMTC)

In 2009, a generous gift from Isabel and Bryce McClintic Rea, established the CMTC, a state-of-the-art music lab available to all Midland College music students. The CMTC’s digital technology includes Roland HP-307 pianos and computer workstations equipped with a Roland PRELUDE keyboard, Bose speaker system, PreSonus Audio Interface and PC configured for real-time recording. Software installed on the workstations include, Alfred Essentials of Music, AudioBox, AudioScore Ultimate 6, Band-in-a-Box, Music Ace Maestro, PhotoScore Ultimate 6, Sibelius 6 and Steinberg Sequel 2.

Wagner & Brown Auditorium

The Wagner & Brown Auditorium is the Music Department’s primary space for performance. Located in the Allison Fine Arts building, the auditorium seats 250 and is complemented by two Steinway concert grand pianos; a nine-foot Model D (named Romero by the donor, F. Marie Hall) and a seven-foot Model B. Both pianos are kept in impeccable performance shape.

The auditorium hosts the performances of all Midland College Music Department ensembles, guest artists, music workshops, master classes, recitals and local/state music competitions. In 2018, an audio/video renovation was completed. The renovation included new line array speakers, subwoofers, Epson 1080p HD projector, Sharp 60” 1080p HDTV monitor, three Sony PTZ cameras and all necessary video switching, recording and streaming equipment.

The Wagner & Brown Auditorium is now a state-of-the-art facility, allowing any presentation, performance and/or lecture to be recorded, edited for later broadcast or streamed for complete access..

Midland College has articulation agreements with a variety of schools and programs to assist our students with transferring to a university. Our curriculum maps, located in the catalog, provide a guided path for general transfer to our top five receiving institutions; however, your Pathways Advisor can assist you with a personalized plan for your specific transfer based on university and program. It is strongly recommended and encouraged that you contact your Pathways Advisor for assistance with course selection if you plan to transfer.

• In 2010, Midland College became the first institution in West Texas and the fourth community college in the nation to be designated an All-Steinway School.
• In 2009, the Department of Music opened the Permian Basin’s most advanced music lab to date, the Bryce and Isabel McClintic Rea Center for Music Technology and Creativity.
