Sonography is the use of sound waves to generate an image needed to assess and diagnose various medical conditions. Sonography is used to evaluate organs and tissue in many areas of the body. These specialties include vascular, obstetrics, gynecology, urology, and abdominal. A sonographer obtains the image necessary for a physician to diagnose and treat the patient.
At Midland College, an Associate of Applied Science for Sonography prepares you to
work in entry-level positions in hospitals and other health care facilities through
hands-on laboratory practice and a variety of clinical rotations. Students to learn
how to use high-frequency sound waves to produce images needed for assessment and
diagnosis of various medical conditions.

The Midland College Sonography Program is a 22-month curriculum leading to an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Sonography. Courses are completed in four 16-week academic semesters and one 12-week summer session.
Sonography is a full-time program. Sonography classes will begin in the fall semester (August) of every year. Courses consist of class, lab, and clinical rotations. Due to clinical availability, the class size is limited. Travel to clinical sites is required. Clinical rotations are spread throughout West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
WHAT TO EXPECT IF ACCEPTED
- Class meets on campus 1-2 days per week each semester.
- Practicum (clinical) rotations are completed at an assigned clinical site 2-4 days per week, 8 hours per day.
- Students are required to maintain American Heart Association Basic Life Support licensure and personal health insurance throughout the duration of the program.
APPLICATION SUBMISSION PERIOD: MAY 15 – JUNE 15
The sonography program is a competitive admission program. Therefore, not all applicants are admitted. Only completed applications will be accepted. Applicants are responsible for ensuring their application file is complete.

- Complete Midland College application.
Enrollment & Aid - Complete a Midland College Health Sciences Application.
Health Sciences and Allied Health General Application - Take the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS Version 7) and score a minimum
level of PROFICIENT.
Testing Services - Complete a clinical site visit within 12 months prior to application submission (must
be completed after June 15 of the previous year).
- Complete the following courses with a minimum grade of “C” or above.

Scholarship Plus Employment
Midland College, in partnership with Midland Memorial Hospital, offers up to a full scholarship (tuition, fees, books, uniforms, supplies and licensing exam fees).
Applicants must be admitted to this MC program, complete a Midland Memorial Hospital application, interview and complete a work agreement before the scholarship will be applied. Scholarship recipients will commit to two years of employment with Midland Memorial Hospital.
