First Generation Student Initiatives

The First-Gen initiative programming that MC works collaboratively with the MC Career & Transfer Center, Pathways Advising, and other MC campus resources to ensure a seamless transition from high school to higher education and beyond. Emphasizing access, completion, and post-college success, the First-Gen Department harnesses existing campus knowledge, experience, and resources to better support first-generation students, aiding both retention and achievement. Our multi-faceted approach to meeting students where they are and addressing their varying levels of participation, time, and need include:

  • First Gen Advising Initiative
Specialized academic advising and coaching for students who opt in via the new student survey or contacting your Academic Advisor.

  • First Gen Student Organization
Established in October 2024, this student-led club fosters community and engagement through peer mentorship.

  • Ambassador Program
A scholarship program which encourages personal leadership and community involvement. Ambassadors serve the community through volunteerism and service while earning a $1,000.00 scholarship each long semester (fall/spring).

  • First Gen CTE Childcare Initiative
Grant funded childcare stipend available to full-time Midland College students enrolled in CTE majors.

  • First Gen Champions
A volunteer faculty/staff mentoring program supporting student success.

Research shows that first-generation students often face obstacles that can affect academic success, persistence, and graduation rates. Our initiatives focus on identifying those challenges early, providing targeted support, and building strong advisor-student relationships to keep students motivated and on track.

  • Opt-In for Support: As a first-gen student, you can choose to participate in the program by opting in for specialized advising.

  • Tailored Guidance: Once enrolled, you’ll be connected with an Academic Advisor who understands the first-gen experience and will work with you to create personalized strategies for success.

  • Regular Check-Ins: Expect to meet with your advisor at least twice each semester (fall and spring) to discuss progress, address concerns, and plan your next steps.

This program isn’t just about academic planning—it’s about fostering connections, building confidence, and ensuring you have the tools and support to thrive in college and beyond.

Your Community, Your Success

Starting college can feel like a big leap, especially for first-generation students—but you don’t have to navigate it alone. The First-Generation College Student Club at Midland College is here to support you every step of the way. This inclusive and welcoming community is designed for first-generation students—whether you’re transitioning straight from high school or returning to college after time away. If your parents didn’t complete a 2- or 4-year degree, this is your space to connect, grow, and thrive.

  • Find Your People: Build connections with fellow first-gen students who understand your journey.

  • Access Resources: Take advantage of guidance, mentorship, and practical tools to help you succeed academically and personally.

  • Navigate College Life: Get support tailored to your unique challenges, so you can focus on reaching your goals with confidence.

When We Meet

We come together on the first Monday of each month (excluding holidays) in the FLRC, Room 213, to share experiences, ideas, and encouragement.
