Nurse Aide

Nurse Aides are important! Working as a nurse aide is a rewarding career and can be a stepping stone to future nursing career pathways.

This program prepares students for entry level nursing assistants and achieves a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents. High school diploma and GED are NOT required.

Content includes residents’ rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Clinical is practical instruction with close and/or direct supervision provided by the clinical professional (faculty or preceptor), generally in a clinical setting. Clinical education is an unpaid learning experience. This is a direct patient contact course.

Upon successful completion of the program the student is eligible to take the Texas Nurse Aide Certification Exam (CNA).

Courses Offered

Nurse Aide Classroom

This nurse aide classroom course will provide the student with knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include resident's rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Emphasis on effective interaction with members of the healthcare team, restorative services, mental health, and social services needs. No high school diploma or GED required. 

Nurse Aide Clinical

The Nurse Aide clinical course is practical instruction with close and/or direct supervision provided by the clinical professional (faculty or preceptor), generally in a clinical setting. Clinical education is an unpaid learning experience. This is a direct patient contact course.

Spring 2026 Instruction Delivery Options & DATES

Option 1: In-Person Class & Clinicals

Monday - Thursday, 8:30 am - 3 pm

January 12 - February 16
February 23 - April 2
April 13 - May 14

Option 2: Computer Based Hybrid Training 

The Computer-Based Hybrid Training option combines online coursework with required in-person skills and clinical training through Midland College.

Three Required Program Components:

          1. Online Classroom Instruction (60 Hours)
            • Completed online through Texas Health & Human Services (HHSC)
            • Known as Computer-Based Training (NATCEP)
            • Free, self-paced online training
            • Satisfies the 60-hour classroom requirement needed to be eligible for the state certification exam
          2. Skills Assessment Class – In-Person
            • Completed through Midland College
            • Cost: $200
          3. Clinical Training – In-Person
            • Completed through Midland College
            • Cost: $350

Spring 2026 Schedule

Skills Assessment Class

Monday – Thursday, 5:30 – 9:30 pm

        • Cohort One: January 12 – January 20
        • Cohort Two: April 6 – May 3

Clinical Training

Four Weekend Dates, 6 am – 6 pm

        • Cohort One: January 24 – 25 & February 7 – 8
        • Cohort Two: April 18 – 19 & May 2 – 3

How to Get Started

  1. Complete the online training modules through Texas Health & Human Services:
    Texas Health and Human Services Registration

  2. After completing the online modules, submit your Viewpoint Screening application. Instructions on how to do so can be found under the "Application Steps" tab below.

  3. Once both steps are complete, contact Ivy Villa to schedule a registration appointment.

Program Requirements

    • 18 years or older

    • Copy of Photo ID or Driver’s License

    • Copy of Social Security Card

    • CPR Certified
      Provide a copy of current CPR Certification.
      Must be American Heart Association, BLS, within past 2 years.

      Risk Management Training Course Offerings

    • Pass Criminal Background Check (processed by Viewpoint Screening)

    • Proof of Current Immunizations
      • Flu (October - March)
      • Tetanus (Td or Tdap) - 1 shot within last 10 years
      • MMR - 2 shots if born after 1957
      • Hepatitis B series - all 3 shots or 2 dose Heplisav series
      • Tuberculosis (TB) test (negative result) - within last 12 months
      • Varicella (chicken pox) - 2 shots

Required Supplies

    • One (1) set of scrubs:
      • Hunter green scrub top
      • Khaki scrub pants
    • Watch with a second hand
    • Closed-toed tennis shoes
    • Nurse Aide clinical patch (must be worn on the top left sleeve of the scrub top)

Optional Supplies

Provided in class unless you choose to purchase your own

    • Gait belt
    • Manual Blood Pressure Cuff & Stethoscope Set
    • Thermometer with sleeves/probe covers

Step 1 - Complete the application and upload all required documents at Viewpoint Screening:
Step 2 - Once the approval is complete, call us at (432) 681-6354 to make a registration appointment.
 
 

Total Program Cost for in-person classes = $970

    • Includes tuition & fees for the classroom and clinical instruction.
      • Classroom Tuition – $500
      • Clinical Tuition – $350
      • Exam Fee – $12
    • BOTH courses must be completed to register for the State of Texas exam.

Total Program Cost for Hybrid Classes = $670

    • Includes tuition & fees for the skills assessment and clinical instruction.
      • Skills Assessment Tuition – $200
      • Clinical Tuition – $350
      • Exam Fee – $120 
    • BOTH courses must be completed to register for the State of Texas exam.

Health Sciences Continuing Education Scholarships

Scholarships are available for qualified applicants. Apply in the department office. 

As an in-person Nurse Aide student, expect

    • Classes on Monday – Thursday, 8:30 am – 3 pm
    • Work closely with a small group of students
    • 10 - 15 hours/week outside of class personal study time to be successful
    • 72 hours of classroom instruction
    • 48 hours of hands-on clinical instruction

As a hybrid Nurse Aide student, expect

    • Occasional evening/weekend classes
    • Work closely with a small group of students
    • 10 - 15 hours/week outside of class personal study time to be successful
    • 20 hours of classroom instruction
    • 48 hours of hands-on clinical instruction

Upon Successful Completion of the Program

Eligible to take the Texas Nurse Aide certification exam

Nurse Aide Opportunities

Nurse Aides can make up to $38,200 in the state of Texas. The most common areas of work for a CNA are long-term care facilities, hospitals, physician offices, health departments, and home health care agencies.
