How we can help!

Counseling and mental health and Accommodation Services are available to all enrolled Midland College students. Students can communicate with the Counselor in person, by phone and by email. Information is shared with instructors as necessary and appropriate.

Mental health assessments are conducted at the request of a student or faculty/staff member through the MCPD in partnership with the Midland County Sheriff's office.

If needed, a referral to an outside agency will be provided.

MC works with various mental health providers to reduce wait times and cost, depending on the needs of the student.

Jon Kabat-Zinn in his 1994 book “Wherever You Go, There You Are” says that mindfulness is paying attention in the present moment, on purpose, non-judgmentally.

Mindfulness meditation has been shown to reduce the effects of pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia and improve blood pressure.  It has also been shown to increase gray matter in the brain and enable people to handle the life stressors better. The basic idea of mindfulness meditation is to focus on the immediate moment by concentrating on something happening in the here and now like breathing.

The UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center has a number of free mindfulness meditations on different subjects like helping with sleep, dealing with difficulties and kindness.
