Asynchronous online courses (known as WEB courses in the course registration system) are taught in a virtual classroom environment using Midland College’s Learning Management System (LMS): Canvas. Access to a reliable Internet connection and computing device is required for students take WEB courses.
WEB courses are completed asynchronously by the student, meaning students review the course content and complete required assignments at their own pace before the posted deadline (typically assignments are due once a week or every other week in WEB courses). This also means that there are no regularly occurring class meeting times for which the student must be in attendance in WEB courses.
Most WEB courses do not require any on-campus class attendance. In some instances, there may be required face-to-face attendance (no more than 15%) for proctored exams, orientation, or laboratories. Check the online course syllabus for detailed information regarding any attendance requirements.
Hybrid courses reduce the amount of face-to-face instruction in the classroom and replace it with an online component so that a significant portion of the course (more than 50% but less than 85%) occurs online. A typical schedule for a 16-week hybrid course might include one in-person class meeting per week in conjunction with an online lesson, assignment, and/or discussion to be completed by the student, at the student’s pace, by the end of that week.
Access to a reliable Internet connection and computing device is required for students take hybrid courses. Please note that Hybrid courses are coded as WEB courses in the Midland College course registration system.

Live online courses have a set meeting day and time for the duration of the course, just like a typical face-to-face course schedule. However, instead of meeting face-to-face in the classroom, class meetings take place virtually online via Zoom.
Attendance and active participation in all class meetings is required by students who take live online courses. To be able to fully participate in a live online course, access to a reliable Internet connection and computing device is required for students.
