Asynchronous online courses (known as WEB courses in the course registration system) are taught in a virtual classroom environment using Midland College’s Learning Management System (LMS): Canvas. Access to a reliable Internet connection and computing device is required for students take WEB courses.
WEB courses are completed asynchronously by the student, meaning students review the course content and complete required assignments at their own pace before the posted deadline (typically assignments are due once a week or every other week in WEB courses). This also means that there are no regularly occurring class meeting times for which the student must be in attendance in WEB courses.
Most WEB courses do not require any on-campus class attendance. In some instances, there may be required face-to-face attendance (no more than 15%) for proctored exams, orientation, or laboratories. Check the online course syllabus for detailed information regarding any attendance requirements.
Hybrid courses reduce the amount of face-to-face instruction in the classroom and replace it with an online component so that a significant portion of the course (more than 50% but less than 85%) occurs online. A typical schedule for a 16-week hybrid course might include one in-person class meeting per week in conjunction with an online lesson, assignment, and/or discussion to be completed by the student, at the student’s pace, by the end of that week.
Access to a reliable Internet connection and computing device is required for students take hybrid courses. Please note that Hybrid courses are coded as WEB courses in the Midland College course registration system.
Live online courses have a set meeting day and time for the duration of the course, just like a typical face-to-face course schedule. However, instead of meeting face-to-face in the classroom, class meetings take place virtually online via Zoom.
Attendance and active participation in all class meetings is required by students who take live online courses. To be able to fully participate in a live online course, access to a reliable Internet connection and computing device is required for students.

Online Student Resources
As a Midland College online student, you have access to a variety of resources and support services designed to help you stay connected, succeed in your courses, and work toward your academic goals. In additional to using our in-person services, select links below to learn more about additional online academic resources available to you.
Midland College students have free access to Tutor.com, 24/7, that offers a variety of subjects. Tutor.com is available directly through Canvas and gives students 24/7 access to academic support, even outside of regular campus hours. This is especially helpful for online students who may be completing coursework in the evenings, on weekends, or from a location away from campus.
Students can connect with a live tutor for help in many subject areas, ask quick questions,
or get support while working through an assignment.
Students also have virtual access to Midland College Library resources to support their coursework and research. Through the library website, students can search for articles, eBooks, journals, databases, and other academic materials without needing to be on campus.
The library can help students find credible sources, complete research assignments,
and better understand how to use academic databases. Students may also contact library
staff for help with research questions or locating materials for a class. This gives
online students access to important academic support, even if they are completing
their courses fully online.
Online students can also access Academic Success Coaching through Midland College. Coaching gives students one-on-one support to help them stay organized, manage their time, build study strategies, and stay on track in their courses.
For online students, coaching can be especially helpful because online classes often require more independence and self-direction. Our coach can help students create a plan for completing assignments, balancing school with work or personal responsibilities, preparing for exams, and improving overall academic habits. Coaching is designed to support students before they fall behind, but it can also help students get back on track if they are already struggling.
Through the Chap Success Center, students can receive one-on-one support with Canvas related issues, including introductions to the platform. For additional information, use the link below.
Some Midland College online classes require exams and quizzes to be proctored, either in-person or online. This is a supervised or recorded test. Please check the course syllabus or contact the instructor directly to learn about the proctoring requirements and options for the course.
