TSI Information & Requirements

What is the TSI?

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a State mandated program designed to help students be successful in college. It includes an assessment, Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA2), of students before entering a state-supported college or university advisement and an individual plan designed to prepare students to meet college-readiness skills.
 

Am I Exempt?

Students pursuing a level 1 certificate are not required to test or provide scores. Students may only take courses on their certificate plan. For additional information, please check with your pathways advisor.

Any Student

The following scores will exempt any student on one or more of sections of the TSIA2. Test scores are valid for up to 5 years following the date the test was taken.

STAAR Level 2 score of 4000 on the English III (EOC)
Level 2 score of 4000 on the Algebra II (EOC)

 

Dual Credit Students

In addition to the above, Dual Credit students may also be eligible to enroll in academic dual credit courses based on the following:

ACT-Aspire 435 on English
431 on Mathematics

 

Students are exempt from the TSIA2 if they:
  • have an associate or baccalaureate degree from an institution of higher education
  • transfer from an out-of-state, private or independent institution of higher education and completed a listed academically restricted course in each area from that institution
  • transfer from an in-state public institution of higher education and deemed college ready by that institution
  • are enrolling in a certificate program of one year or less (Level-One certificates, 42 or fewer total hours)
  • are serving on active duty and have been serving three years prior to enrollment
  • were honorably discharged, retired or released from active duty on or after August 1, 1990
  • are a casual/non-degree seeking student

Passing the TSI Assessment (TSIA2) is not required to become a student at Midland College. However, the scores determine college readiness and may impact class selection in the first semester.

The TSI Assessment is designed to measure your current college readiness. While you don't need to memorize new material, reviewing key concepts before test day can help ensure your score reflects what you truly know. Many students choose to prepare because they may not have used certain math, reading, or writing skills recently. A quick review can help refresh those skills, reduce test-day anxiety, and increase confidence.

Preparing for the TSI may help you:

  • Refresh concepts you haven't used in a while.
  • Become familiar with the types of questions you'll see.
  • Identify strengths and areas that may need additional review.
  • Feel more confident on test day.
  • Earn a placement that accurately reflects your current abilities.

The College Board's official ACCUPLACER website is the best place to begin your TSI preparation. This is the same organization that develops the TSIA2, making these resources the closest match to the actual exam.

  • Official TSIA2 Practice Tests that closely resemble the actual assessment

Need additional support? The Chap Success Center offers free in-person and virtual TSI tutoring to help you prepare for the exam.

TSI tutoring is available for:

  • Future Midland College students preparing to enroll
  • Students scheduled to take the TSI Assessment through Midland College
  • Current Midland College students needing additional TSI support

Our tutors can help you strengthen your Math and English skills, review practice test results, answer questions, and build the confidence needed for test day. Before your tutoring session, we recommend completing the official ACCUPLACER Practice Test. Bring your results to your session so your tutor can personalize instruction based on the areas where you need the most support.

In-person tutoring occurs within the Writing Center and Math Lab at Midland College, while virtual tutoring is through Microsoft Teams.
