Structured Query Language (SQL) underlies the relational databases that are at the core of most oil and gas software applications. Our introductory one-day course is tailored for students with minimal or no prior SQL experience, guiding them through the fundamentals of this robust and sophisticated language. Through interactive examples and hands-on exercises, participants will grasp both the theory and practical applications of SQL. This Intro to Power BI for Oil & Gas class is designed for current Excel or Spotfire
users that are new to Power BI (generally <40hrs hands-on experience). The course
teaches a full entry-level workflow to allow for students, after course completion,
to connect to
available datasets, create a basic data model, and build visualizations to kickstart
their Data Analysis journey.
This course is applicable to all levels in the organization, from engineers, geoscientists, accountants, data analysts and executives & leaders. Each student will walk away with a very robust understanding of Power BI and the use of data analytics in O&G.

This hands-on course will introduce Python features relevant for oil and gas professionals. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Python syntax by using Python packages to import, manipulate, and visualize data. Attendees will complete a series of exercises via Google Colaboratory -- a cloud-based platform similar to Jupyter Notebooks. Exercises include importing Excel, CSV, and LAS files; connecting to SQL databases; performing calculations on data tables; creating histograms, scatter plots, bar charts, line plots, and maps; and exporting results for use in other software.

This hands-on course will introduce TIBCO Spotfire features relevant for oil and gas professionals. Participants will learn the fundamentals of importing data, creating visualizations, calculating custom properties, and exporting results by building a simple production database and interactive bubble map of the Niobrara Formation in the DJ Basin. By the end of the course, participants will be able to create: (1) Rate-Time and Cum-Time bar, scatter, and line charts; (2) summary tables by well, operator, township, and county; (3) IP and Cum Volume bubble maps with GOR indicators; and (5) rules-of-thumb for exporting quick, readable visualizations for Microsoft PowerPoint.
Requirements: Students need to bring a laptop with TIBCO Spotfire version 10.4+ installed. The software can be downloaded as a trial from TIBCO’s website. The license must be the analyst license not the consumer license.

This hands-on course will introduce existing TIBCO Spotfire users to more advanced features relevant for oil and gas professionals. Participants will learn how to connect to SQL databases; create data connections and sources within their Spotfire library; scrub and extract data sets via data transformations and regular expressions; and use marking, filtering, text areas, hierarchies, and binned columns to create more dynamic visualizations. In addition, attendees will learn how to use TERR and Python data functions for enhanced mapping capabilities and simple decline curve analysis.
Pre-requisites: Participants must have prior experience in Spotfire or attended the TIBCO - Beginner Course.
